More online privacy for officers and officials

Texas expands privacy protection in online property records to peace officers and people with authority under Article 2A.002. Protection also covers federal judges, including bankruptcy judges, U.S. marshals, U.S. attorneys, state judges, and qualifying family members. After a written request, county clerks or county-contracted database providers must hide the covered person's Social Security number, driver's license number, and home address. This applies to documents available in those public online databases. Each redacted document's online page must clearly state that information has been removed under state law. The notice must explain that the database is not the official record source and may show incomplete or altered records. The act sets immediate effect with two-thirds approval in both houses; otherwise, its effective date is September 1, 2025.
