New injury coverage rules for Texas responders

Qualifying employees get workers’ compensation for service with Texas Task Force 1, intrastate fire mutual aid teams, or regional incident management teams. Their team service counts as regular employment when activated by the Texas Division of Emergency Management. Coverage also applies to injuries during training sponsored or approved by that Division or Texas Task Force 1. Nongovernment members no longer qualify based only on team membership. These changes apply to work-related injuries occurring on or after September 1, 2025. Earlier injuries remain covered by the law in effect when the injury occurred.
