Annual pay cap for Texas volunteer firefighters

Beginning September 1, 2026, Texas fire departments face a calendar-year payment cap for designated volunteer and auxiliary firefighters. The cap covers compensation, reimbursements, and benefits combined. It equals 20% of the highest total compensation a local government in the department’s county pays full-time fire protection staff. If no local government in that county pays full-time fire protection staff, the comparison uses the highest such compensation in adjacent counties.
