New Texas licensing paths for military veterans

Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas licensing boards must license qualifying veterans as physician assistants or nurses. Applicants must hold a current license in good standing in the same profession from another state. They must have retired or left military service no more than one year before applying and received an honorable discharge. When leaving service, they must have been on active duty, authorized in that profession to treat enlisted service members or veterans. They must also pass their profession’s Texas law exam. Boards must deny this route for active investigations, discipline, or denials involving professional or controlled-substance licenses in another jurisdiction. Felony or moral-turpitude misdemeanor convictions, deferred adjudication or deferred disposition, and active investigations also bar this route. Existing licensing routes remain available.
