The law takes effect September 1, 2025. Texas shoppers pay no state sales tax on each qualifying clothing or footwear item priced below $100. Each year's exemption runs from 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August through midnight the following Sunday. The law does not expand the exemption to school-related items. Taxes owed before the effective date remain governed by prior law, including collection and civil or criminal enforcement.
