Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas sheriffs must check each jail prisoner's veteran status at intake using federal veteran records or a similar service. Counties must send that status when transferring a defendant to state prison. Once status is verified, sheriffs must provide a prepaid Texas Veterans Commission postcard to request help applying for veterans benefits. Verified veterans also get free in-person or video visits with a county veterans service officer or peer service coordinator. State prisons must mail benefit applications and related paperwork free for veteran inmates who may qualify for federal veterans benefits.
Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas counties must send mental health records when transferring a defendant to state prison. This includes screening reports or similar mental health information. The requirement helps the state prison system receive information about the person's mental health.
