Texas county judges face bond requirements

Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas county judges and statutory county court judges must provide a bond before starting office. The bond is payable to the county treasurer. County commissioners set the amount, generally from $1,000 to $10,000. Judges handling guardianship or probate cases must have a bond of at least $500,000. Bonds must guarantee faithful performance of office duties, including Estates Code duties for guardianship and probate cases. County criminal court judges are exempt. Statutory probate court judges are also exempt when they provide a bond, insurance, or self-insurance under Government Code Section 25.00231.
