Texas local governments face bail funding limits

Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas local governments cannot use public money to pay certain bail nonprofits. The ban covers nonprofits that accept public donations and use them to deposit defendants’ bail money with a court. A taxpayer or resident of the local government can ask a court to stop prohibited activity and related payments. Any party that wins the case is entitled to recover reasonable attorney’s fees and costs.
