Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas provides diesel tax credits or refunds for fuel used in Texas by vehicle-mounted equipment. Eligible equipment includes auxiliary power units and power take-off equipment, and the fuel tax must already have been paid. License holders claim credits on the tax return for the period when they bought the fuel. Those without a license file refund claims with the Texas Comptroller. The comptroller may approve methods that accurately measure equipment fuel separately from driving fuel while the vehicle is stopped. Without a separate meter or approved measuring method, the comptroller sets the eligible share of each vehicle’s diesel use. The new relief excludes fuel used for idling or heating and air conditioning mainly for driver or passenger comfort.
