Williston replaces elected listers with trained assessors
Beginning June 15, 2026, Williston must hire or contract with professionally qualified property assessors, replacing elected listers. Assessors must meet state training rules before doing assessment work. They take on listers’ assessment powers, duties, and legal responsibilities. Current listers’ terms end 45 days after passage or when an assessor is hired or contracted with, whichever is later. The tax-abatement board consists of the Board of Civil Authority and Town Treasurer, without listers. A quorum requires a majority of the Board of Civil Authority and the Treasurer. These changes do not themselves change property-tax rates, bills, or who qualifies for tax relief.
