Free school birth certificates for qualifying families

Beginning July 27, 2025, qualifying families pay no standard $25 fee for a child's certified birth record. A parent or guardian must request it to enroll the child in early learning or public school. The child must belong to a household eligible for or receiving SNAP or Washington state food assistance. Families must show a benefits letter or other documents proving eligibility.

More age documents accepted for school enrollment

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington requires state agencies to adopt rules accepting several forms of age proof for enrollment. These rules cover public schools and the state's early childhood education and assistance program. Accepted documents include birth certificates, passports, and religious, hospital, or doctor's certificates showing the child's birth date. Families can also use a family Bible birth-date entry, an adoption record, or a parent's sworn statement. A school record whose information was already verified is also accepted.

Free death records for closing court debts

Beginning July 27, 2025, Washington waives death certificate fees for certain requests from county clerks or courts. The office must request the record to end a deceased offender's court-ordered financial obligation. This waives the office's record fee; it does not itself cancel the debt.
