Child care providers get sex-offender notices
Beginning July 1, 2026, Wyoming's Division of Criminal Investigation must notify nearby child care facilities about offenders convicted of listed offenses. These are the offenses specified in W.S. 7-19-302(h) or (j). Notice must reach every covered child care facility within at least 1,000 feet of the offender's home. Registration notices also go to the county district attorney where the offender lives or moves. For those listed offenses, residential neighbors and community organizations within at least 750 feet must receive notice by a method reasonably designed to reach them. When an offender works at or attends an educational institution, the institution can request notice to a member of its campus community.
Sex-offender housing limits and address checks
Beginning July 1, 2026, Wyoming adults required to register as sex offenders cannot live within 1,000 feet of a child care facility. Distance runs from the nearest point on the home's outside wall to the facility's property line. Homes established before July 1, 2026, or before the facility opened at that location are exempt. Other existing statutory exceptions remain in place. Covered facilities include providers licensed by the Wyoming Department of Family Services. They also include government-owned, administered, or supervised facilities providing child care for payment at a parent's, guardian's, or responsible agency's request. Elementary, middle, and high schools are excluded from this definition. After receiving registration information, the Division of Criminal Investigation must check the offender's address and whether an exception applies. At an offender's request, the sheriff or division must also check whether a supplied address is within 1,000 feet.
