ABB India traces its heritage to Brown Boveri & Cie (BBC), a Swiss electrical engineering company founded in 1891 in Baden, Switzerland by Charles Eugene Lancelot Brown and Walter Boveri. BBC established operations in India during the British colonial era to supply electrical equipment to railways and industrial infrastructure. When Sweden's ASEA merged with Brown Boveri in 1988 to form ABB Ltd. (one of the largest industrial mergers of the decade), the Indian subsidiary became ABB India. In 2020, when ABB sold its global Power Grids division to Japan's Hitachi (forming Hitachi Energy), ABB India separately retained its own transformer manufacturing operations in Nashik and Faridabad -- creating an unusual situation where two companies with ABB heritage compete in the Indian and export transformer market. ABB India's Indian stock exchange listing makes it a rare case of a foreign industrial conglomerate's subsidiary being publicly traded in its local market while maintaining separate strategic direction from the global parent.
