  1. 01

    Fuel/Resource Extraction

    Raw energy resources are extracted or captured: natural gas is drilled and piped from wellheads (Permian, Appalachian basins); uranium ore is mined and milled into yellowcake; coal is surface- or deep-mined; wind and solar resources are harnessed in situ. The U.S. relies on domestic natural gas for ~43% of generation but imports ~90% of uranium concentrate.

    Fuel Processing & Conversion

    Fuels are refined for power plant use: natural gas is processed to remove impurities and transported via interstate pipelines; uranium yellowcake is converted and enriched (to 3–5% U-235 for reactor-grade LEU) then fabricated into fuel pellets; coal is pulverized or cleaned; polysilicon for solar cells is purified to semiconductor grade (>9N purity).

    Electricity Generation

    Power plants convert fuel or renewable resources to electricity: gas-fired combined-cycle plants (CCGT) burn gas to spin turbines; nuclear reactors heat water via fission; wind turbines convert kinetic energy via permanent-magnet generators; utility-scale solar PV converts photons via silicon cells; coal plants combust to drive steam turbines. Output is at generation voltage (typically 11–25 kV).

    Step-Up Transmission (High Voltage)

    Generator step-up (GSU) transformers raise voltage to 115–765 kV for bulk transmission across the three U.S. interconnections (Eastern, Western, ERCOT). High-voltage transmission minimizes resistive losses over long distances. GSU transformers are custom-built, weigh up to 400 tons, and currently have lead times of 2–4 years.

    Bulk Transmission

    Electricity travels hundreds to thousands of miles on high-voltage transmission lines (steel/aluminum conductors, ACSR or ACCC). The U.S. grid has approximately 600,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage lines managed by ~3,000 utilities and ISOs/RTOs. Physical resilience depends on towers, insulators, and switching substations.

    Step-Down Substation & Distribution

    Substations step voltage down in stages (to 4–35 kV for primary distribution). Distribution transformers (pad-mounted or pole-mounted) perform the final step-down to 120/240V for residential delivery. The U.S. has 60–80 million distribution transformers, ~55% of which are near end-of-life per NIAC 2024 report. Lead times for distribution transformers have tripled since 2019.

    Advanced Metering & Load Management

    Smart meters (AMI — Advanced Metering Infrastructure) record consumption in 15-minute intervals and transmit data via radio/cellular to utilities. The U.S. had approximately 115 million smart meters installed by 2023 (EIA). Meters contain RF SoC chips, LCD displays, and tamper-detection hardware. Itron and Landis+Gyr together hold ~66% of the North American installed base.

Orano is 45% owned by the French government (through CEA) and holds ~15% of global enrichment capacity. Tricastin also hosts uranium conversion (UF6) facilities run by Orano. The Tricastin nuclear complex is one of France's most critical nuclear fuel cycle sites.
