Producer
Actega (Altana Group)
Specialty coatings and sealants division of Altana AG (privately held German specialty chemicals group, Quandt family). Self-described 'technological leader' in water-based sealants for food and beverage can lids and closures; also produces BPA-free can interior coatings and lacquers. Focuses on the sealing gasket compound in can ends (not full-surface interior spray coatings — a distinct niche). Operates facilities in Europe, North and South America, and China.

Did you know2024
Altana AG's portfolio simultaneously serves the food packaging supply chain (ACTEGA can sealants), the automotive paint supply chain (BYK additives for automotive coatings; ECKART metallic pigments for BMW metallic paint finishes), the cosmetics supply chain (ECKART pearlescent and metallic pigments for lipstick and nail polish), and the electrical equipment supply chain (ELANTAS insulation resins for motors and transformers). The same privately-held German Quandt family specialty chemicals group is embedded in: the food can that holds your tomatoes, the metallic paint finish on a BMW, the sparkle pigment in a luxury cosmetic, and the insulation on a wind turbine motor. The range of unrelated industrial supply chains within one German family-controlled company — from soup can sealing to cosmetic shimmer to automotive metallic — rivals any other European specialty chemical group in breadth.
Altana AG ↗Origin2023
Actega is the coatings and sealants division of Altana AG — a German specialty chemicals holding company owned by the Quandt family foundation. The Quandt family is better known as BMW's largest shareholder group (Stefan Quandt and Susanne Klatten together hold ~46% of BMW): the same German industrialist family that controls BMW also controls Altana AG, which includes ACTEGA (food can sealants), BYK (paint additives), ELANTAS (electrical insulation), and ECKART (metallic effect pigments). Altana was built from an initial investment by Günther Quandt (Herbert and Harald Quandt's father) and has been developed by the broader Quandt family wealth. The family that profits when a BMW is sold (BMW shareholder) also profits when a food can is sealed (ACTEGA), when automotive paint is formulated (BYK additives and ECKART metallic pigments), and when an electrical motor is insulated (ELANTAS).
