ADAMA's predecessor company Makhteshim was founded in 1952 in the Negev Desert town of Be'er Sheva by the Israeli kibbutz movement — collective farming communities that were a cornerstone of Zionist socialist ideology. Makhteshim (Hebrew: "craters," referring to the geological formations around Be'er Sheva) was literally a kibbutz cooperative enterprise, owned and governed by the kibbutz members who needed affordable crop protection chemicals for their communal farms. The Israeli kibbutz movement, organized around collective property ownership and egalitarian labor, built a global generic agrochemical business that would have surprised its founders: Makhteshim grew through the 1970s-1990s as generic crop protection chemicals exploded, acquired Agan Chemical Manufacturers to form Makhteshim Agan Industries, went public on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, and was then acquired by China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina) in 2011. The company rebranded as ADAMA ("earth" in Hebrew) in 2014. A kibbutz cooperative founded by socialist Zionist farmers in the Israeli desert is now a subsidiary of the Chinese Communist Party's state chemical enterprise, listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, and selling crop protection chemicals across 100 countries.
