It is also, separately, the sole-source supplier of ABF (Ajinomoto Build-up Film) -- the insulating polymer film used in the substrate of every advanced CPU and GPU made by Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, Apple, and Qualcomm. ABF is a thermosetting resin film applied in multiple alternating layers during chip packaging to electrically isolate circuit traces. Without ABF, the Hopper GPU in an NVIDIA H100, the M4 chip in a MacBook, and Intel's latest Xeon processors cannot be manufactured. Ajinomoto holds patents that have made competitive entry technically difficult for decades. The global semiconductor industry -- a $600B+ market -- sits on a single Japanese food company's polymer chemistry division that accounts for approximately 10% of Ajinomoto's revenue.

Ajinomoto was founded in 1909 by chemist Kikunae Ikeda, who had just discovered the fifth basic taste -- umami -- by isolating glutamic acid from kombu seaweed. Ikeda noticed that certain foods (ripe tomatoes, aged cheese, cured meat, seaweed broth) had a savory, mouth-coating quality that was distinct from sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. He identified monosodium glutamate as the compound responsible and patented its production from seaweed fermentation. A Tokyo businessman named Saburosuke Suzuki partnered with Ikeda to commercialize the discovery as Aji-no-moto (meaning 'essence of taste'). The company grew by teaching Japanese housewives to use MSG as a universal seasoning enhancer, expanding through Asia and eventually globally. Its amino acid fermentation expertise, developed over 115 years of refining MSG production, is the same technological foundation that today makes the insulating film inside every advanced semiconductor.
