AkzoNobel (Amsterdam) applies its coatings chemistry expertise simultaneously to three regulated consumer-facing applications with entirely different safety frameworks: (1) food contact — Accelshield BPA-free coatings for the interior of food cans, regulated under FDA 21 CFR and EU Regulation 10/2011 for food contact materials; (2) residential — Dulux architectural paint for home walls, regulated under VOC emission standards and REACH for chemical safety; and (3) marine — International ship hull coatings including antifouling biocide coatings (TBT-free, regulated under IMO AFS Convention). The same Sassenheim, Netherlands research laboratory developing BPA-free food can coating chemistry also develops antifouling copper-biocide coatings for ship hulls — two consumer safety/environmental regulatory frameworks (food contact safety and marine biocide environmental protection) solved by the same Dutch coatings company. The regulatory chemistry expertise spans from what touches baby food to what prevents barnacles on supertankers.

AkzoNobel was created in 1994 by the merger of Akzo N.V. (Netherlands; specialty chemicals and coatings) and Nobel Industries AB (Sweden). Nobel Industries' name derives directly from the Nobel family — Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), the Swedish chemist who invented dynamite (1867), held patents on nitroglycerine explosives, and whose will established the Nobel Prizes. Nobel's brother Ludvig Nobel and Alfred's estate built industrial enterprises in Sweden that became Nobel Industries, which diversified into coatings and specialty chemicals before merging with Akzo. The 1994 merger thus joined Dutch specialty chemicals (Akzo) with Swedish industrial chemical heritage (Nobel Industries, Dyno Nobel explosives) into one company — which then progressively exited chemicals to focus on coatings. The company that coats soup cans with BPA-free Accelshield and paints London homes Dulux Magnolia White traces its corporate lineage to the inventor of dynamite.
