Allnex traces its lineage through Cytec Industries -- the coatings and specialty chemicals business carved out of American Cyanamid in 1993. American Cyanamid was one of the US's largest chemicals companies in the mid-20th century, and its coating resin expertise was built up through decades of polymer chemistry research. Cytec's coating resins were sold to Advent International PE in 2013 as Allnex. The Hexion UV Shanghai operations (optical fiber coating resins from the former Hexion/Momentive Specialty Chemicals) were acquired by Allnex in 2015. Allnex's UV-curable resin business for optical fiber coating is strategically important: nearly every fiber optic cable requires urethane acrylate UV resins for the primary and secondary coatings applied at the fiber drawing stage. Allnex, DSM (now Covestro/Avient), and a small number of other suppliers provide the specialty resin chemistry that protects the glass in global internet backbone fiber.
