    Feedstock Synthesis

    Ultra-high-purity chemical precursors are produced: silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) via chlorination of metallurgical silicon, and germanium tetrachloride (GeCl4) refined from smelter by-products. These vapors form the glass matrix of the fiber core and cladding.

  2. 02

    Optical Fiber Preform Manufacturing

    A large cylindrical glass blank (preform) is fabricated using one of four CVD processes — OVD (Outside Vapor Deposition, Corning-patented), VAD (Vapor Axial Deposition, Sumitomo/Furukawa), MCVD, or PCVD (Plasma CVD, YOFC). Silica soot doped with germanium dioxide is deposited layer by layer, then consolidated into a clear glass rod.

  3. 03

    Fiber Drawing

    The preform is vertically fed into a draw tower (15–20 m tall), where the tip is heated to ~2000°C. A hair-thin fiber (~125 µm diameter) is pulled downward at 20–30 m/s. Liquid helium or helium gas quenches the fiber for dimensional stability.

  4. 04

    Fiber Coating

    Freshly drawn fiber passes through dual UV-curable acrylate coating cups — a soft inner primary coat and a harder outer secondary coat — reaching ~250 µm outer diameter. Specialty fibers may receive additional hermetic carbon or polyimide coatings.

  5. 05

    Cable Assembly

    Coated fibers are arranged into buffer tubes or ribbon stacks, surrounded by aramid yarn (Kevlar/Twaron) strength members, water-blocking gel or dry tapes, and an HDPE outer jacket. Armored cables add corrugated steel or aluminum tape.

  6. 06

    Testing and Qualification

    Finished cable undergoes OTDR attenuation testing, chromatic dispersion measurement, tensile load and crush resistance, environmental temperature cycling, and water penetration tests per ITU-T G.652/G.657 and IEC standards.
