Amiad Water Systems (Kibbutz Amiad, Upper Galilee Israel; now wholly owned by Itochu Corporation, Japan) produces disc filters for two very different markets simultaneously: (1) agricultural irrigation — the disc filters that protect drip emitters from clogging in Israeli, Spanish, and Californian farms; and (2) industrial water treatment — the same disc filtration technology is used in municipal water pre-treatment, industrial cooling tower water filtration, desalination pre-treatment, and oil & gas produced water management. Itochu Corporation (Tokyo; one of Japan's six largest sogo shosha trading houses — the diversified trading conglomerates that manage most of Japan's commodity trade) acquired Amiad in 2021 for approximately ¥15B (£94M) in a privatization of the TASE (Tel Aviv Stock Exchange)-listed company. An Israeli agricultural water technology company founded on a Kibbutz in the Galilee was acquired by one of Japan's most powerful trading houses — the same Itochu that trades textiles, petroleum, aerospace components, food commodities, and real estate. Israeli water IP is now embedded in a Japanese corporate conglomerate with global reach into markets where Amiad previously had limited distribution.

Amiad Water Systems (via its Arkal Filtration brand) has an exclusive global distribution agreement with Netafim, meaning the company that controls ~30% of drip emitter supply also controls the primary source of disc filters that protect those emitters from clogging. This creates a vertically integrated Israeli chokepoint in drip system performance.

Amiad Water Systems was established in 1962 at Kibbutz Amiad — a collective agricultural settlement founded in 1946 in the Upper Galilee region of northern Israel. Kibbutz members developed the disc filter specifically to solve a practical problem with Israel's emerging drip irrigation systems: the narrow drip emitters (typically 0.5-1mm orifices) clogged with organic particles, algae, and fine sand from the Jordan River and Galilee spring water used for irrigation. The stacked grooved disc design creates a 3D filtration matrix with high dirt-holding capacity and allows automatic backwash under system pressure without interrupting irrigation flow. The technology was commercialized from the kibbutz and grew into an internationally listed company (London AIM: AFS) while the kibbutz retains a founding stake. The same water scarcity that drove Israel to develop drip irrigation (Netafim kibbutz Hatzerim, 1965) drove development of the filtration that protects it (Amiad kibbutz, 1962) — both emerging from kibbutz collective agricultural communities responding to the same Negev desert and Galilee water constraints.
