  • Incident2015

On August 16, 2012, South African police opened fire on striking mineworkers at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine in North West Province, South Africa — killing 34 miners and wounding 78 in the deadliest use of force against civilian protesters in post-apartheid South Africa. The miners were employees of Lonmin (London-listed platinum miner; eventually acquired by Sibanye-Stillwater in 2019) who were on strike demanding wage increases. The massacre — documented in the film 'Miners Shot Down' and subject of the Farlam Commission of Inquiry — immediately disrupted Lonmin's platinum production and triggered sympathy strikes across multiple platinum mines in the Bushveld. Global platinum prices rose in response to the production disruption. The Marikana Massacre became a defining political and labor moment in South African history — exposing the contradictions between black labor power, post-apartheid black economic empowerment structures (including ANC-connected figures on Lonmin's board), and the living conditions of platinum miners in informal settlements around the world's most valuable metal deposits. Every catalytic converter fitted to a vehicle between September and December 2012 may have incorporated platinum whose production was disrupted by the massacre.

Anglo American Platinum's platinum production simultaneously enables fossil fuel vehicle emissions control (legacy application) AND hydrogen fuel cell clean transportation (emerging application) — making it indifferent at the material level between the ICE era and the hydrogen era: (1) Gasoline/hybrid three-way catalysts — platinum reduces hydrocarbons and CO from gasoline engine exhaust; every new gasoline and hybrid vehicle contains platinum TWC catalyst; Amplats platinum is in Toyota Prius, Honda Civic, and every major gasoline vehicle globally; (2) PEM hydrogen fuel cell electrodes — platinum nanoparticles on carbon (PtC) are the proton exchange membrane fuel cell anode/cathode electrocatalyst; Toyota Mirai, Hyundai Nexo, and all PEM fuel cell vehicles require platinum; (3) PEM electrolyzer anodes — platinum-iridium electrodes are used in PEM electrolyzers for green hydrogen production from renewable electricity. The South African Bushveld platinum mine is simultaneously the critical input for the fossil-fuel-era emissions control technology AND the clean-hydrogen-era fuel cell and electrolyzer technology that may replace it — the same Merensky Reef platinum spanning both sides of the energy transition.

  • Origin2023

Anglo American Platinum (being renamed Valterra Platinum in 2025 following Anglo American's portfolio restructuring) controls the world's largest platinum reserves within the Bushveld Igneous Complex — a 2-billion-year-old geological formation that contains approximately 80% of the world's platinum reserves, located in South Africa's Limpopo and North West Provinces. The Bushveld Complex's platinum concentration is a geological anomaly: magma intruded into 3-billion-year-old crust and crystallized into layered chromitite and pyroxenite rocks with embedded platinum-group minerals at concentrations far exceeding any other known platinum occurrence. The Merensky Reef (discovered 1924 by Hans Merensky) and the UG2 Chromitite Layer (developed in the 1970s-80s) are the primary platinum-bearing strata. Anglo American's platinum operations in South Africa were conducted under apartheid (1948-1994) using Black migrant labor under the Pass Laws system — South Africa's platinum wealth was mined by workers who were legally prohibited from living near the mines, earning urban wages, or owning the land. The post-apartheid era brought Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) requirements, labor union power (AMCU, NUM), and multiple long platinum mining strikes. The world's platinum supply chain was built on a legal racial labor regime that ended only in 1994.
