    Underground / Open-Pit Mining

    PGMs occur in poly-metallic sulfide ores in two formations supplying >95% of global production: the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC, South Africa) and the Great Dyke (Zimbabwe). Nornickel mines from Oktyabrskoye and Talnakh deposits on the Taimyr Peninsula, Russia. Sibanye-Stillwater mines the J-M Reef in Montana — the only significant US PGM deposit. Typical ore grades: 3–6 g/t (SA Merensky/UG2 Reefs), ~20 g/t (J-M Reef, Montana).

  2. 02

    Milling and Concentration (Froth Flotation)

    Crushed ore is ground fine and processed by froth flotation. Air bubbles carry PGM-bearing sulfide minerals to the surface as concentrate, reducing ore mass by ~95% and raising PGM grades from a few grams per ton to 100–500 g/t. Each mine has an on-site concentrator (e.g., Amplats Mogalakwena Concentrator; Zimplats Ngezi Concentrator).

    Smelting (Electric Arc Furnace)

    Concentrate is smelted in electric arc 6-in-line furnaces at ~1,500°C. Iron oxides are fluxed off as slag, leaving PGM-bearing nickel-copper sulfide matte at ~300–1,000 g/t PGM. Extremely power-intensive — South Africa's Eskom load-shedding cut 3–9% of annual PGM output in 2022–2023. Key smelters: Amplats Waterval (Rustenburg), Zimplats Selous Metallurgical Complex, Nornickel Nadezhda Plant (Norilsk).

    Base Metal Refinery (BMR)

    Converter matte is slow-cooled, crushed, and separated by flotation and magnetic separation. Copper and nickel are dissolved in acid leach and recovered as LME-grade cathode. The undissolved PGM-rich leach residue grades 40–60% PGMs by weight. Key BMRs: Amplats Waterval BMR; Implats Springs Refinery; Nornickel Monchegorsk (Kola Peninsula, Russia).

  5. 05

    Precious Metals Refinery (PMR) — PGM Separation

    PGM concentrate is dissolved in chlorine/HCl (chlorination) or aqua regia and individual metals are separated via sequential solvent extraction, ion exchange, and selective precipitation. Multi-stage chemical process separates platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, and osmium to >99.95% purity. Key PMRs: Amplats Rustenburg PMR; Nornickel Krasnoyarsk Refinery; Johnson Matthey (Royston, UK); Heraeus (Hanau, Germany).

    Secondary Recovery — Spent Autocatalyst Recycling

    End-of-life catalytic converters are collected from auto-dismantlers, sampled, assayed, and fed to PGM recycling smelters. High-temperature smelting with copper or iron collectors is followed by refining to recover platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Key recyclers: Heraeus (Hanau, Port Elizabeth, Santa Fe Springs CA), Umicore (Hoboken, Belgium), Sibanye Columbus MT (316,470 oz 3E processed in 2024). Recycling provides ~24% of total platinum supply on a 5-year average.

    Market Delivery

    Refined PGMs are sold as sponge, powder, grain, or solution to four sectors: (1) automotive — catalytic converter manufacturers (BASF Catalysts, Umicore, Tenneco); (2) chemical catalysts (hydrogen, nitric acid); (3) electronics (hard disk HAMR, fuel cells); (4) jewelry. Forward sales, lease structures, and OTC market transactions through Johnson Matthey, Heraeus, and LBMA members govern price discovery.
