Did you know2023
Anqiu Lu'an's APAP is simultaneously the active ingredient in: (1) Children's OTC fever reducers (pediatric liquid Tylenol, chewable tablets) — the primary fever treatment for febrile children; (2) Adult analgesics (standard-strength Tylenol, generic acetaminophen tablets) for headache, minor pain, and fever in adults; (3) Combination prescription opioid products (hydrocodone + APAP = Vicodin; oxycodone + APAP = Percocet) — where APAP is included as an analgesic co-component to limit opioid dosing; (4) Postoperative pain management in hospital settings. The same APAP molecule from Anqiu Lu'an is in a child's Tylenol chewable at home, a hospital patient's post-surgical Percocet prescription, and an elderly patient's daily OTC arthritis pain management tablet. An unplanned shutdown or quality problem at Anqiu Lu'an would simultaneously affect pediatric fever treatment, adult OTC analgesics, and prescription opioid pain management — three distinct and policy-sensitive healthcare segments from one Shandong Province production site.

Anqiu Lu'an Pharmaceutical represents one of the most concentrated supply chain chokepoints for essential medicines globally. Acetaminophen (APAP, paracetamol) — the active ingredient in Tylenol, Panadol, and hundreds of other OTC analgesic/antipyretic products — is the world's most consumed pharmaceutical active ingredient by volume (estimated 120,000-150,000 MT/year global demand). China produces approximately 65-70% of global APAP API; Anqiu Lu'an alone produces ~18% globally. A single pharmaceutical company in Anqiu city, Shandong Province produces more acetaminophen than any other single facility on Earth. The pediatric Tylenol shortage in the US during late 2022 — which coincided with respiratory illness surges and elevated fever medication demand — was partly attributable to APAP API supply chain concentration in China. The FDA's Drug Master File system (Anqiu Lu'an DMF filed 2011) means the company is technically registered with FDA, but US manufacturers switching to alternative APAP sources face qualification delays of months to years.
