The ethane that Antero Resources extracts from Appalachian natural gas and sends via the Mariner East 2 pipeline to Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania for LNG/NGL export is chemically the same compound — with identical molecular formula C₂H₆ — as the ethane that crackers at Shell's Monaca, Pennsylvania facility crack into ethylene, which polymerizes into the polyethylene used in food packaging, agricultural films, and medical supply bags. Antero's ethane molecules that leave through Marcus Hook as an export commodity and Antero's ethane molecules that feed domestic crackers start at the same West Virginia wellhead. In 2022, when European energy prices spiked after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, US ethane exporters (including Antero's NGL stream) faced a choice between maximizing export economics and preserving domestic ethylene cracker feedstock supply — the same Appalachian molecule competed between fueling European petrochemical plants and supplying US plastic packaging manufacturing.
Antero Resources Corporation ↗Origin2024
Antero Resources was founded in 2002 in Denver by Paul Rady and Glen Warren, who had previously built and sold Pennaco Energy (coalbed methane in Wyoming) to Marathon Oil for $500M in 2001. Rady and Warren's insight was that Appalachian Basin geology — specifically the overthrust belts in West Virginia — had conventional natural gas reservoirs being overlooked by industry. As horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing unlocked the Marcellus Shale in 2007-2010, Antero rapidly accumulated over 600,000 net acres in the core of the wet gas window (high NGL content), positioning them as one of the most NGL-rich Appalachian producers. Antero went public in 2013 and by 2023 was producing 3.4 Bcf/d equivalent — making a company founded in a Denver office in 2002 one of the defining producers of the Appalachian natural gas that heats Northeast US homes and is now being liquefied for European energy security.
