  Apotex Inc. (Toronto ON; founded by Barry Sherman in 1974) is the world's largest Canadian-owned pharmaceutical company and produces more generic drug formulations than any other company in Canada — its Signet Drive Toronto facility is one of the largest private pharmaceutical manufacturing sites in North America. Barry Sherman, Apotex's founder, was found murdered in his Toronto home in December 2017 along with his wife Honey Sherman — one of Canada's most shocking unsolved homicides, involving one of Canada's wealthiest individuals (Forbes estimated net worth ~$3.2B). The murder investigation continued for years. Apotex, which supplies ophthalmic fluoroquinolones and other generic drugs to US and Canadian markets, continued operating under family and management control after Sherman's death, maintaining its position as a key supplier in the North American generic pharmaceutical supply chain. A company whose founder was murdered is a critical node in the ophthalmic antibiotic supply chain — Apotex's ofloxacin ophthalmic formulations filled a critical gap during the US shortage following Akorn's bankruptcy.

  Apotex Inc. was founded in 1974 by Barry Sherman (1942-2017) in Toronto, Ontario — a pharmacist and entrepreneur who built the company from a small generic pharmaceutical startup into the largest Canadian-owned pharmaceutical company with annual revenues of ~CAD 2 billion. Sherman became one of the wealthiest Canadians (estimated net worth ~CAD 5 billion at time of death) and was known for aggressive litigation against branded pharmaceutical companies that he claimed used patents to block generic competition. In December 2017, Barry Sherman and his wife Honey were found dead in their Toronto home, hanging from a pool railing. Toronto Police initially treated it as a suspicious death; autopsy results led investigators to conclude it was murder. Despite extensive investigation, including police concluding in 2018 that it was a targeted murder-for-hire (not a random crime), no criminal charges have been filed as of 2024. The unresolved murders of Apotex's founder and his wife represent one of the most significant unsolved high-profile homicides in Canadian history. Apotex's ownership, governance, and succession planning were complicated by the absence of resolution and ongoing estate litigation among Sherman's heirs.

  Apotex's sterile ophthalmic manufacturing facility in Toronto is one of only ~3 remaining US-qualified suppliers for ofloxacin ophthalmic solution following the bankruptcy of Akorn Pharmaceuticals (2023) and Sandoz's discontinuation of the product. Ofloxacin ophthalmic is a first-line antibiotic eye drop for bacterial conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, and post-surgical ocular infection prevention. When Akorn filed for bankruptcy and ceased production, US hospital and pharmacy supply shifted to a smaller number of qualified suppliers including Apotex. The same Apotex Toronto sterile plant that supplies ofloxacin eye drops to US pharmacies also supplied generic carboplatin injection (chemotherapy) and other sterile injectables to US hospital formularies during periods of drug shortage. A single Canadian pharmaceutical company's Toronto facility serves both everyday infectious eye disease (ofloxacin for pink eye in children) and cancer treatment (carboplatin for ovarian cancer) from the same GMP-qualified sterile manufacturing assets.
