Asahi Holdings, Inc. (Tokyo; TSE: 5857) is a Japanese precious and rare metals recycler that recovers indium from various electronic manufacturing scrap streams — including ITO target manufacturing waste, LCD panel scrap, and compound semiconductor manufacturing residues. Founded in 1952 and headquartered in Tokyo, Asahi operates the Bando Plant in Ibaraki Prefecture for precious/rare metals recovery. Asahi Holdings is a secondary indium producer (recycled rather than primary mine byproduct), making it an important component of the circular economy for ITO — recovering indium from used/scrap targets that can contain 70-80% of the original indium after sputtering, which is economically valuable at current indium prices (~$200-300/kg). Japan has developed significant secondary indium recovery infrastructure as a national strategy to reduce primary indium import dependency.

Asahi Holdings recovers precious and rare metals from three industries that rarely see themselves as connected: (1) jewelry and dental — recovering gold, silver, and platinum from retired dental prosthetics, jewelry repair scrap, and ceremonial objects; (2) automotive — recovering palladium and rhodium from catalytic converter scrap (the same PGM metals that reduce tailpipe emissions are recovered after vehicle retirement); and (3) electronics — recovering indium from ITO sputtering target manufacturing waste and LCD panel scrap (the same indium used in smartphone and TV screens is recovered for recycling). The Tokyo company that a Japanese dentist calls to pick up gold dental alloy waste is the same company that a Japanese display manufacturer calls to recover indium from their ITO manufacturing scrap — and the same company that automotive dismantlers call to recover catalytic converter PGMs. Asahi Holdings sits at the intersection of jewelry, automotive, and electronics recycling with shared precious metals recovery expertise.

  • Origin2023

Asahi Holdings was founded in 1952 in Tokyo as a precious metals recovery company — primarily recovering gold and silver from Japanese dental practices (dental gold alloys are high gold content, making dental scrap one of the most economically significant precious metal scrap streams), jewelry, and later electronic scrap. Japan's high urban density, developed electronics industry, and historical precious metals culture (tea ceremony utensils, Buddhist temple objects, Japanese swords with precious metal fittings) created dense precious metal scrap streams that Asahi industrialized. The rare metals recovery business (indium, gallium) was added as a natural extension: the same hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical expertise used for gold/silver recovery can be adapted for trace-concentration rare metals recovery from complex electronic scrap matrices. Japan developed one of the world's most sophisticated e-scrap precious and rare metals recovery industries specifically because Japan imports almost all of its metals and developed closed-loop urban mining as a national resource strategy.
