    The Ross 308 broiler chicken was developed at Ross Poultry Breeders Ltd in Newbridge, Midlothian, Scotland beginning in the 1950s through selective breeding for feed conversion ratio (how efficiently a bird converts corn and soybean meal to breast muscle). The 1970s and 1980s saw dramatic genetic gains: broilers that took 84 days to reach market weight in 1950 now reach market weight in 35 days. Ross 308 achieves a feed conversion ratio of 1.55:1 (1.55 lbs of feed per lb of live weight) — among the most efficient terrestrial animal protein conversions in biology. The same selective pressure that optimized for muscle growth also produced a bird with large breast muscle that crowds thoracic cavity, reducing cardiac and respiratory reserve, making Ross 308 susceptible to sudden death syndrome and ascites under heat or low oxygen. The EW Group (German family holding company, Wesjohann family) acquired Ross Breeders and Arbor Acres in 2002, combining them under Aviagen — one German family now owns the genetics behind ~40% of the world's commercial chicken production.
