Axens simultaneously supplies conventional petroleum refining catalysts (ULSD hydrotreating, gasoline reforming) AND renewable fuel production catalysts (HVO/SAF hydroprocessing, biogas upgrading). The same Salindres, Gard manufacturing facility produces catalysts for fossil fuel processing and catalysts for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production from vegetable oils. Refiners transitioning from conventional to renewable fuel production can source both their conventional and transition-pathway catalysts from Axens, with IFPEN research backing both product lines. Axens was spun off from IFP Energies nouvelles (Institut Francais du Petrole -- Energies nouvelles) in 2001. IFPEN is a French government-funded public research institute established in 1944 to give France strategic independence in petroleum technology -- created when postwar France recognized it needed domestic petroleum engineering expertise to manage French energy policy without dependence on US or Anglo-Dutch oil company technology. IFPEN generated proprietary refining process technology (reforming, hydrotreating, FCC) through decades of French government-funded research. Axens was created to commercialize IFPEN's petroleum process technology portfolio on the open market -- meaning French taxpayer-funded research in petroleum engineering became the basis for a commercial technology and catalyst company that sells to refiners globally. The Salindres, Gard production facility -- in the Languedoc-Roussillon chemical corridor of southern France -- receives French government support (France Relance subsidy) for production capacity investment. A French government public research institute is a major catalyst supplier to global petroleum refiners, its technology commercialized through a partially public-funded subsidiary.
