The Segura River basin, where Murcia sits, has a mean annual precipitation of 300mm -- similar to semi-arid California -- and Spanish Mediterranean agriculture has been practicing water efficiency by necessity for centuries. AZUD's founders built a filtration and micro-irrigation company directly in response to Murcia's agronomic reality: drip irrigation for Spanish citrus, pepper, artichoke, and vegetable production required reliable, low-maintenance filtration that could handle the high sediment loads of Murcian surface water and the scaling potential of Segura River water. The company expanded internationally because the agricultural water challenge AZUD solved in Murcia is nearly identical to challenges in California, India, and the Middle East.
