    Baker Hughes traces two origin stories simultaneously: Hughes Tool Company, founded in 1908 by Howard Robard Hughes Sr. in Houston, who invented the tri-cone rotary drill bit (US Patent 930,759, 1909) that made it possible to drill through hard rock formations — the tool that unlocked much of the 20th century's oil and gas resources; and Baker International, founded in 1907 by Reuben Carlton Baker in Coalinga, California, making downhole casing equipment. Howard Hughes Sr.'s drill bit patent funded his son Howard Hughes Jr.'s career: the eccentric billionaire aviator, filmmaker, and recluse built his early fortune on Hughes Tool Company royalties from the indispensable rolling cutter bit. Hughes Jr. used this income to fund the Hughes Aircraft Company, the Spruce Goose, and his Las Vegas hotel acquisitions. The modern Baker Hughes (formed in 1987 from Baker/Hughes merger, then recombined with GE Oil & Gas in 2017) is the corporate descendant of the drill bit that directly funded Howard Hughes Jr.'s entire career. A tool company started to help wildcatters drill Texas oil wells in 1908 now makes the gas turbines derived from GE jet engines that power US Navy destroyers and compress natural gas through interstate pipelines.
