    Wellhead production & gathering

    Natural gas is extracted from subsurface reservoirs (primarily shale plays: Marcellus/Utica, Permian, Haynesville, Anadarko). Raw gas travels through small-diameter, low-pressure gathering pipelines to field processing plants. US marketed production reached a record 113.1 BCF/day in 2023, led by Texas (31.6 BCF/d) and the Appalachian Basin (32% of total).

    Field processing & treating

    Gas-oil separators, condensate removal, dehydration (to prevent hydrate formation in pipelines), and amine-based treating to strip H₂S and CO₂. Hydrocarbon gas liquids (NGLs: ethane, propane, butane) are fractionated out. Result: pipeline-quality dry natural gas meeting Btu and quality specs.

    Interstate pipeline transmission

    Processed gas enters ~305,000 miles of interstate high-pressure transmission pipeline (FERC-regulated). Compressor stations spaced ~50–100 miles apart maintain pressure and flow. Kinder Morgan operates ~51,000 miles (moves ~40% of US gas consumed), Williams Companies ~32,000 miles. TC Energy (ANR, Columbia Gas Transmission) and Energy Transfer are also major operators.

    Underground storage

    Gas is injected into 393 underground storage fields (working capacity ~4,772 BCF as of 2023): depleted oil/gas reservoirs (79%), salt caverns (10%, concentrated in Gulf Coast), and aquifers (11%). Injection occurs April–October; withdrawal November–March. Pre-winter storage levels typically 3,500–4,000 BCF — low storage entering winter is the primary short-term price spike driver.

    LNG peak-shaving (winter surge buffer)

    Local distribution companies operate ~70 LNG liquefaction/storage facilities (68+ BCF aggregate capacity) for extreme cold-weather demand peaks. Gas is liquefied in summer, stored in insulated tanks, and re-vaporized during demand spikes. New England relies especially heavily on LNG: underground storage is geologically unavailable across most of the region, so LNG (including imports at the Everett terminal in Boston, supplied from Trinidad) provides ~28% of design-day supply for New England gas utilities.

    Local distribution (LDC mains)

    State-regulated local distribution companies (LDCs) receive gas from interstate pipelines at city gate stations and deliver it through ~2 million miles of lower-pressure distribution mains and service lines. Modern mains are medium-density PE (polyethylene) pipe; legacy infrastructure includes cast iron (installed 1870s–1920s in Northeast cities) and bare steel, which are leak-prone and being replaced under PHMSA-mandated programs.

    Odorization, metering & pressure regulation

    Before residential delivery, LDCs inject mercaptan odorant (typically tert-butyl mercaptan/THT blend, detectable at ~0.00029 ppm) so leaks are detectable by smell. Pressure regulators step down from distribution pressure to household levels (~0.25 psi). Smart gas meters (AMI) record consumption; Itron, Landis+Gyr (Honeywell/Elster), and Aclara dominate the meter market. Gas then feeds home furnaces, water heaters, ranges, and dryers.
