The company's history in encapsulation technology began when it developed spray-chilling methods to protect sensitive food ingredients -- nutrients that oxidize or interact adversely in food matrices when unprotected. Balchem's ReaShure protected choline for dairy cow nutrition (launched 1990s) was one of the first commercial applications of encapsulation to ruminant nutrition; the same encapsulation technology was then applied to infant formula ingredients. The choline mandate for US infant formula (enacted under FDA's rule updating infant formula nutrient requirements, 2023-2024) added choline to the required list -- a nutrient for brain development that Balchem was already producing and selling. The FDA mandate converted a voluntary infant formula inclusion into a mandated one, automatically expanding Balchem's addressable market.
