BASF's Vitamin A synthesis at Ludwigshafen uses isoprenoid (terpene) chemistry — the same chemical pathway that produces citral (the lemon fragrance compound), linalool (the lavender fragrance compound), and other terpene-based fragrance raw materials. The beta-ionone intermediate in Vitamin A synthesis is the same chemical family as the ionone compounds used in violet and woody fragrance notes. BASF's terpene chemistry platform simultaneously supplies: the animal nutrition supply chain (Vitamin A for poultry, swine, cattle, and fish) and the fine fragrance and consumer fragrance supply chain (citral, linalool, geraniol sold to Givaudan, Symrise, and IFF). When terpene feedstock prices rise (as they do when citrus oil becomes scarce, affecting natural citral supply), both the vitamin and the fragrance supply chains are simultaneously affected. BASF's Verbund integration — where one plant's intermediate feeds another plant's synthesis — makes this cross-supply-chain dependency essentially invisible from the outside, but a disruption to BASF's Ludwigshafen isoprenoid chemistry cascade would affect both the fragrance you smell in Tide laundry detergent and the Vitamin A in your chicken's feed supplement simultaneously.

BASF was founded in 1865 in Ludwigshafen, Germany as Badische Anilin- und Soda-Fabrik (Baden Aniline and Soda Factory) — a synthetic dye company in the early era of organic chemistry. In 1913, BASF chemist Carl Bosch (working with Fritz Haber) scaled the Haber-Bosch process — the synthesis of ammonia from atmospheric nitrogen and hydrogen — to industrial production at BASF's Oppau works near Ludwigshafen. The Haber-Bosch process is arguably the single most consequential chemical invention of the 20th century: it enabled synthetic nitrogen fertilizers that now feed approximately 50% of the world's population. Without Haber-Bosch ammonia, Earth's current population could not be fed. BASF's Ludwigshafen Verbund complex — the world's largest integrated chemical production site, covering 10 square kilometers with 250 production plants connected by 2,850km of pipes — remains the physical embodiment of this 160-year industrial legacy. The animal nutrition vitamin E that BASF sells to chicken farmers is the output of terpene chemistry developed at the same Verbund complex that synthesized nitrogen for 20th-century European agriculture.
