Beijing Tianhai manufactures both conventional medical oxygen cylinders (aluminum and steel, Type I/III, for hospital respiratory therapy) AND high-pressure Type IV composite cylinders for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) at 350/700 bar. The medical and FCEV applications use completely different vessel engineering: medical oxygen cylinders operate at ~150 bar in Type III aluminum; FCEV hydrogen tanks operate at 700 bar using carbon fiber-wrapped polymer-liner Type IV technology. But the underlying competency — designing, testing, and manufacturing pressure vessels for high-pressure gas storage — is shared. Chinese government policy has simultaneously pushed FCEV hydrogen mobility (truck/bus fleet) and medical oxygen infrastructure expansion; Beijing Tianhai serves both. Beijing Tianhai Industry is China's largest high-pressure cylinder manufacturer — a company type rarely discussed in supply chain intelligence but structurally critical. High-pressure gas cylinders are the final delivery package for compressed medical gases (oxygen, nitrous oxide), industrial gases (nitrogen, argon), and fuel gases (CNG, hydrogen). Without cylinders, compressed gas cannot be transported from production plants to end users. Tianhai's cylinders are used primarily in China's massive hospital sector (medical oxygen for hundreds of millions of patients) and industrial facilities. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed how hospital oxygen cylinder supply can be a critical bottleneck: when oxygen demand surged in South Asia in April-May 2021 (India's Delta variant surge), the shortage was not only in oxygen production capacity but also in cylinder availability and filling capacity. China's Tianhai, as the world's largest cylinder manufacturer, represents a potential single-country concentration in a globally critical medical device component.
