Biosev is a subsidiary of Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) — one of the four commodity trading giants known as the "ABCD" traders (Archer-Daniels-Midland, Bunge, Cargill, Louis Dreyfus) that collectively handle a significant fraction of globally traded agricultural commodities. LDC was founded in 1851 in Alsace, France by Léopold Louis-Dreyfus — a French-Alsatian grain merchant who built the company into a major European grain trader before it expanded globally. LDC is now a Geneva-based holding company owned by the Louis-Dreyfus family trust. The company's 170+ year history spans from Alsatian grain trading to controlling sugarcane mills in Brazil's Center-South region. LDC acquired Biosev to integrate Brazilian sugar and ethanol production into its global commodity trading system — Biosev's sugar and ethanol can be sold into any global market through LDC's trading networks and logistics infrastructure spanning grain, oilseeds, coffee, cotton, sugar, and juice. A 19th-century Alsatian grain merchant's family business now controls the second-largest sugarcane crushing operation in Brazil, the world's largest sugar exporting country, through 170 years of commodity trading expansion.
