  • Did you know2023

BITZER SE compressors appear in three separate energy and food system supply chains: commercial refrigeration (supermarket display cases and cold storage for food retail), industrial heat pumps (factory space heating from waste heat), and ORC (organic Rankine cycle) waste heat power generation (converting industrial waste heat into electricity). The same German family-owned compressor company contributes to food supply chain reliability (keeping supermarket food cold), building energy efficiency (replacing natural gas heating with heat pump heating), and renewable power generation (ORC modules turning factory waste heat into electricity). A BITZER manufacturing disruption -- from a factory fire, labor action at Rottenburg or Schkeuditz, or a quality hold on screw compressor components -- would simultaneously affect food retail refrigeration, heat pump deployment for European building decarbonization mandates, and waste heat recovery projects at industrial facilities.

  • Origin2023

BITZER was founded in 1934 in Sindelfingen, Baden-Wurttemberg by Peter Bitzer, a German engineer who began making compressors for refrigerating appliances during Germany's postwar economic reconstruction. Sindelfingen is better known as the location of Mercedes-Benz's primary vehicle manufacturing plant -- BITZER grew up in the shadow of German automotive manufacturing and adopted many of the same precision engineering standards and supplier discipline. The company remained family-owned and family-operated through its first 80 years; Peter Bitzer's son and subsequent family members maintained ownership. BITZER's acquisition of Rotorcomp (scroll compressor technology) and development of the Ecoline reciprocating compressor line expanded it from a specialist in commercial refrigeration into the world's largest independent compressor manufacturer by unit volume -- with products in supermarket refrigeration systems, industrial cold chain, heat pumps, and ORC power generation. A German family company from a Mercedes town became the world's largest independent compressor maker without going public.
