    BlueScope Steel Limited was created in 2002 when BHP Billiton — the Anglo-Australian mining giant — decided to exit the steel business by spinning off its flat steel products division as a separate ASX-listed company. The demerger gave BlueScope's management a pure-play steel company and gave BHP a cleaner mining-focused portfolio. But hidden within the BlueScope spin-off was a dormant IP asset: BIEC International, the entity that licenses the Galvalume (55% aluminum-zinc-silicon alloy coated steel) trademark and process technology globally. Galvalume was originally invented by Bethlehem Steel in the United States in 1969 and licensed globally. BlueScope had inherited BIEC International ownership through the maze of steel industry consolidation. The result: an Australian flat steel company became the quiet global licensor of the most widely used metal roofing coated steel specification in North America — collecting royalties every time a mill in the US, Canada, or internationally labels their product "Galvalume."

    BlueScope's Port Kembla Steelworks in New South Wales is one of the last integrated steelworks (blast furnace → basic oxygen furnace → rolling → coating) still operating in Australia. It produces the flat steel that is the substrate for Australia's COLORBOND roofing — the dominant roofing material in Australian residential construction, covering the majority of Australian homes. Port Kembla also produces steel used in Australian infrastructure, defense procurement, and manufacturing. Australia's entire domestic flat steel production — and thus the material substrate for most residential roofing, warehouse construction, and metal fabrication — runs through a single steelworks in Wollongong, New South Wales. A Port Kembla production disruption (flood, industrial action, energy shortage — the steelworks requires consistent high-voltage industrial power) would eliminate Australia's domestic flat steel production and force dependence on imported coil from Japan, South Korea, or China for all new construction, roof replacement, and steel fabrication.
