    E-glass fibers melted and drawn into filaments; chopped and bound with urea-formaldehyde resin into non-woven mat; mat quality (tensile strength, thickness uniformity) determines shingle performance grade

  2. 02

    Asphalt Saturation

    Fiberglass mat passes through saturant asphalt bath at 350-400°F; asphalt penetrates mat voids for full saturation; basis for waterproofing performance

  3. 03

    Coating Asphalt Application

    Thicker coating asphalt (oxidized/blown) applied to both mat surfaces; top coat receives ceramic granule embedment; back coat receives release tape and back surfacing

    Granule Embedment

    Ceramic-coated mineral granules dropped onto hot asphalt coating; pressed in for adhesion; granule color/type creates product differentiation; back granules/mica prevent sticking in bundles

    Cooling and Cutting
