The Bosch Sensortec BMI270 6-axis IMU that Apple embeds in iPhones for screen rotation, step counting, and fall detection is a consumer-grade version of the same MEMS accelerometer/gyroscope technology that — in aerospace-grade form — stabilizes drone gimbal cameras, guides small tactical munitions (the APKWS Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System uses MEMS IMU for accuracy), and provides heading and attitude reference for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The IMU chip in a $1,000 iPhone uses the same capacitive suspended-mass sensing principle as a $50,000 MEMS IMU in a military drone navigation system. Export control regulations (EAR, ITAR) distinguish consumer-grade from military-grade IMUs by shock survivability, bias stability, and temperature range specifications — but the fundamental physics, manufacturing process, and supply chain are identical. A shortage of MEMS foundry capacity at Bosch Reutlingen would simultaneously affect iPhone motion sensing, drone stabilization gimbals for aerial photography, and autopilot altitude sensors for commercial drones.

Bosch Sensortec's origin is in Bosch's automotive sensor division — Robert Bosch GmbH, founded in Stuttgart in 1886 as an automotive precision mechanics and electrical engineering workshop, became the dominant global automotive sensor company through the 20th century. Bosch invented the first automotive Lambda (oxygen) sensor in 1976, the first ABS wheel speed sensor for production vehicles in the 1970s, and built the MEMS fabrication capability to produce airbag triggering accelerometers at automotive scale and reliability. Bosch Sensortec was created in 2005 as a separate entity to serve the consumer electronics market with lower-cost, less ruggedized versions of the same MEMS sensor technology Bosch had developed for automotive. The smartphone sensor market exists because the automotive MEMS supply chain — built to put inertial sensors in airbag systems — created the MEMS manufacturing scale and expertise that could be adapted for phones, wearables, and IoT devices at consumer electronics economics.
