Bridgestone's Off-the-Road (OTR) mining tire business produces the largest rubber tires in the world: the 59/80R63 series for the Caterpillar 797 ultra-class haul truck (400-tonne payload capacity) measures approximately 4 meters in diameter and weighs over 5 tonnes — more than a family car. Each of the 6 tires on a Caterpillar 797 costs $15,000-70,000 and must be replaced every 5,000-8,000 hours of operation in an open-pit mine. The same Bridgestone that makes tires for bicycles and economy cars in its consumer tire business also makes the giant rubber structures that move billions of tonnes of copper, iron ore, and coal out of mines annually. Agricultural Bridgestone tires (VF technology for reduced soil compaction) and OTR mining tires are at opposite ends of the application spectrum — one minimizes soil disturbance for crop yield, the other endures extreme rock loading in open-pit pits.

Bridgestone Group Japan (parent of Bridgestone Americas) manufactures seismic isolation bearings — large laminated rubber pads installed under building foundations or bridge supports to isolate structures from earthquake ground motion. These rubber bearings allow buildings to 'float' on the ground during seismic events, absorbing shaking energy without transmitting it to the structure. Bridgestone is one of Japan's largest seismic isolation bearing manufacturers; the technology has been installed under hundreds of Japanese buildings and bridges following the 1995 Kobe earthquake and 2011 Tōhoku earthquake experiences. The same rubber material science and vulcanization expertise that makes Bridgestone tires also makes the earthquake safety devices that protect Japanese buildings. A tire company is critical infrastructure for both food production (farm tractor tires) and earthquake disaster preparedness (seismic isolation bearings) across Japan.

Bridgestone Americas was established as the US holding company when Bridgestone Corporation (Japan, founded 1931 in Kurume, Fukuoka by Shojiro Ishibashi — whose surname literally means 'stone bridge' = Bridgestone) acquired Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in 1988 for $2.6B. The Firestone acquisition was the largest acquisition by a Japanese company of a US firm at that time. Firestone brought the iconic Harvey Firestone brand, 11 US manufacturing plants, and a supply relationship with Ford Motor Company dating to Henry Ford's original tires. The 2000 Firestone ATX/Wilderness AT tire recall (14.4 million tires, linked to 271 US traffic deaths from tread separation at high speed on Ford Explorers) tested the acquisition severely — exposing Bridgestone to $3B+ in liability and damaging both brands. Post-recall quality improvements restored the Firestone brand to profitability.
