    Electric arc furnaces melt scrap steel and pig iron to produce molten gray iron, ductile iron, and alloy steel for casting and forging operations. Nucor's 29 EAF mills and independent foundries like Waupaca supply the starting material.

    Casting & Forging

    Molten iron poured into sand molds produces engine blocks, transmission housings, axle carriers, and gear cases. John Deere's captive Waterloo foundry produces exclusively for internal use; external suppliers (Waupaca, Grede) serve CNH and AGCO. Steel forgings produce axle shafts and connecting rods.

    Precision Machining

    CNC machining centers finish castings and forgings to tight tolerances — gear tooth profiles, bearing bores, hydraulic valve bodies. Significant share of machining is sourced from contract shops in China, Mexico, and Eastern Europe.

    Hydraulic System Assembly

    Cylinders, pumps, valves, and manifolds are assembled into sub-systems. Parker Hannifin, Bosch Rexroth, and Danfoss Power Solutions supply the major OEM hydraulic assemblies used in steering, lift, and transmission circuits.

    Rubber Track & Tire Manufacture

    Natural rubber compounded with carbon black and steel cord is molded under heat and pressure to produce drive lugs, tracks, and tires. Camso/Michelin dominates agricultural rubber tracks; Bridgestone, Trelleborg, and Continental supply ag tires.

    Precision Ag Electronics Assembly

    GNSS receivers (NovAtel/Hexagon chipsets), RTK correction modules, yield monitors, and control units are assembled and calibrated. OEMs integrate these as factory-fit guidance systems or sell via aftermarket retrofit kits.

    Cab & Sheet Metal Fabrication

    High-strength steel plate (SSAB Domex, HARDOX) is laser-cut, stamped, and robot-welded into chassis frames, hoods, and cab structures. SSAB's HARDOX grades are specified for wear-intensive components like tillage shanks and loader buckets.

    Final OEM Assembly

    All sub-systems — drivetrain, hydraulics, cab, electronics, tracks/tires — are married at OEM final assembly lines. John Deere Harvester Works (East Moline, IL) integrates 18,000+ parts per combine over roughly one week of assembly time.
