    BTR's synthetic graphite represents an unexpected intersection between fossil fuel refining and clean energy: the graphite anode in an EV battery starts its life as a petroleum refining byproduct (needle coke), is graphitized in a high-energy Chinese furnace, and ends up as the anode in the same type of EV battery that is replacing the internal combustion engine vehicles that drove demand for the petroleum in the first place. The same crude oil supply chain that EVs are meant to replace is a raw material feedstock for the battery that replaces it. Beyond batteries, BTR's graphite materials overlap with: electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production (different graphite electrode grade, but same material class); nuclear reactor moderators (nuclear graphite, different grade); and aerospace carbon-carbon composites. The December 2023 Chinese graphite export controls — requiring licenses for battery-grade graphite exports — created immediate supply chain anxiety for non-Chinese EV battery manufacturers (Western, Korean, Japanese) because no alternative scale production base exists for battery-grade synthetic graphite outside China. BTR's 26% global share alone represents a concentration that exceeds the rare earth single-source risks that US policy has focused on.

    The graphite anode inside every Li-Ion EV battery is made from petroleum needle coke — a byproduct of heavy crude oil distillation. BTR New Material Group, the world's largest synthetic graphite anode producer at ~26% global share, converts petroleum needle coke through a 2500-3000°C graphitization furnace process into battery-grade graphite. The petroleum refinery residue (vacuum-distilled from crude oil, particularly sulfur-rich heavy crude) that is used as needle coke feedstock connects EV battery manufacturing to the petroleum supply chain — the same crude oil that is being replaced by EV adoption provides the raw material for the battery anode inside the EV. China's December 2023 graphite export controls (effective December 1, 2023) created immediate attention to this supply chain: ~80-90% of global battery-grade graphite anode material is produced in China, with BTR alone representing ~26% of global supply. A single Chinese company controls more than a quarter of the world's supply of the material that is fundamental to every lithium-ion battery made globally.
