BYD Semiconductor was established in 2004 as BYD Microelectronics, a subsidiary of BYD Company founded by Wang Chuanfu in Shenzhen. BYD Company itself was founded in 1995 as a rechargeable battery manufacturer before pivoting to electric vehicles in 2003. BYD Semiconductor's strategic mandate is clear in its corporate mission statement: Chinese domestic semiconductor self-sufficiency in power electronics, specifically to replace Japanese (Mitsubishi Electric, Fuji Electric), German (Infineon), and US (onsemi) power modules that BYD and other Chinese manufacturers currently import. The induction cooker IGBT, where BYD Semiconductor has dominated the Chinese market since 2018, was the entry product -- a high-volume, relatively lower-performance application that allowed BYD to prove manufacturing quality and scale before tackling the more demanding inverter AC and EV traction applications. A Chinese EV company's semiconductor subsidiary is now a major competitor to the Japanese and German companies whose IGBT modules BYD's own vehicles use for traction power -- BYD is simultaneously a customer of Infineon's EV IGBT and a competitor to Infineon's appliance IGBT, with aspirations to displace both.
