How it's made

The process

  1. 01

Raw Material Extraction & Primary Processing

Mining and primary processing of iron ore (for steel), chromium (for stainless steel), copper (for motors and wiring), neodymium and dysprosium (for permanent magnets), and extraction of isobutane/HFC feedstocks for refrigerants. China dominates rare earth extraction at ~60% of global mining output.

  2. 02

    Specialty Materials Manufacturing

Conversion of raw materials into advanced materials: stainless steel flat products (grades 430 and 304), neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets, glass-ceramic cooktop panels (CERAN and Eurokera lines), and refrigerant gases (R600a isobutane, R134a HFC). These intermediate materials are then supplied to component manufacturers.

  3. 03

    Compressor Manufacturing

Hermetic compressor assembly using precision-machined steel shells, copper windings, refrigerant-compatible lubricants, and motor sub-assemblies. Rotary compressors dominate air conditioners; reciprocating (piston) compressors dominate household refrigerators. China (GMCC) supplies ~75% of global refrigerator compressors; Brazil (Embraco/Nidec) is the leading non-Chinese source.

  4. 04

Electric Motor & Power Electronics Manufacturing

Production of brushless DC (BLDC) and AC induction motors for compressors, drum drives, pumps, and fans. Includes fabrication of intelligent power modules (IPMs), IGBT-based inverter boards, and control electronics. GMCC-Welling produces ~220 million motors/year; Infineon and STMicroelectronics dominate IPM chips.

  5. 05

Sheet Metal Fabrication & Cabinet Forming

Cold-rolled stainless steel (grade 430 for exteriors, 304 for interiors) is stamped, pressed, and roll-formed into outer cabinets, inner liners, door panels, and drums. Porcelain enamel is applied to oven cavities and washer drums. Automated stamping lines operate at high volume in appliance manufacturing hubs in China, the US, and Europe.

  6. 06

    Sub-Assembly & Refrigeration Circuit Integration

Compressors, evaporators, condensers, and expansion devices are assembled into hermetic refrigeration circuits. Refrigerant (R600a or R134a) is charged under controlled conditions. Washing machine tubs, bearing assemblies, and motor drives are integrated. Glass-ceramic panels are cut and decorated for cooktops.

  7. 07

    Final Assembly & Testing

All sub-assemblies—cabinet, refrigeration circuit, control board, door/lid, insulation foam, seals—are combined on automated assembly lines. Each unit undergoes run-in testing, leak testing, energy performance verification, and safety checks (UL, CE, Energy Star).

  8. 08

    Distribution & Last-Mile Delivery

Finished appliances are palletized and shipped via ocean freight from factory to regional distribution centers. Final delivery uses specialized white-goods logistics (two-person delivery with installation). Lead times from Chinese factories to US retail average 8–12 weeks under normal conditions; tariff disruptions in 2025 have extended these to 14–20 weeks.

German glass technology company (HQ Mainz); one of the most unusual corporate structures in global manufacturing: SCHOTT AG is 100% owned by the Ernst-Abbe Stiftung — a non-profit foundation established by optical pioneer Ernst Abbe in Jena, 1889. The foundation channels profits to employee welfare and scientific research. SCHOTT invented CERAN® glass-ceramic cooktop panels in 1971; has sold over 200 million units; estimates 55% of global qualified glass-ceramic cooktop market. ALL CERAN glass is melted at the Mainz, Germany facility using a proprietary controlled crystallization process that converts lithium aluminosilicate glass into the distinctive black glass-ceramic. SCHOTT also produces: ZEISS optical glass (same Jena/Schott historical partnership), pharmaceutical glass vials and syringes (world's largest producer), mirror blanks for the James Webb Space Telescope, and specialty glass for nuclear waste storage. A foundation-owned German company with no shareholders has ~55% of the global induction and electric cooktop glass market and also makes the largest telescope mirrors ever built.

China's (and world's) largest stainless steel producer (private, HQ Wenzhou, Zhejiang); founded by Xiang Guangda ('Big Shot'). Transformed the global stainless industry by developing nickel pig iron (NPI) technology in Indonesia, producing stainless from laterite ores at ~$6,000/tonne vs. $15,000-20,000 for primary nickel — triggering a multi-year global nickel and stainless price collapse. Operates massive integrated stainless facilities in Sulawesi, Indonesia (Morowali Industrial Park) and Qingshan (China). CRITICAL INCIDENT: In March 2022, the LME (London Metal Exchange) suspended nickel trading and cancelled $3.9B worth of trades after prices doubled in hours from a short squeeze — Tsingshan had amassed a 150,000+ tonne LME nickel short position betting on its NPI cost advantage. The LME cancellation was the most controversial exchange action in decades.
