Cargill Animal Nutrition is developing fishmeal substitutes for salmon feed — a critical supply chain challenge because Peruvian anchoveta fishery quotas limit fishmeal availability, and wild fish populations are under pressure. Cargill's Frankfort, Indiana plant produces AlgaPrime DHA (algae-derived omega-3 fatty acids to replace fish oil) and is testing black soldier fly larvae protein as a fishmeal substitute. If Cargill succeeds in decoupling salmon feed from wild-caught marine ingredients, it would transform the aquaculture supply chain: instead of salmon farming depending on the Peruvian anchoveta catch season, it would depend on industrial fermentation (algae) and insect farming (BSF) — inputs that can be controlled year-round. This is potentially the largest structural shift in global protein supply chains since the introduction of soy into poultry rations in the 1950s.

Cargill Animal Nutrition evolved from Cargill's core grain trading business — as the world's largest private grain trader, Cargill realized it could capture more value by processing grain into animal feed rather than simply trading commodity bushels. The 2011 acquisition of Provimi (Dutch animal nutrition company, ~€2.3B) and the 2015 acquisition of EWOS (Norwegian salmon feed, ~$1.35B) transformed Cargill Animal Nutrition from a regional compound feed business into a global animal nutrition platform. The EWOS acquisition was particularly transformative: EWOS was the world's largest salmon feed company, and its acquisition made Cargill — a midwestern US grain trader — a dominant player in Norwegian and Chilean salmon farming supply chains. The same private family-owned company that moves 25% of global grain trade is also the primary nutrition supplier to Atlantic salmon farms.
