These optics are produced essentially at one ZEISS site in Oberkochen, feeding the single EUV scanner maker in the world (ASML). ZEISS has no shareholders in the usual sense: it is owned by the Carl Zeiss Foundation, an arrangement created in the 1890s by physicist Ernst Abbe — the man who put microscope optics on a rigorous scientific footing — after founder Carl Zeiss died. Together with glass chemist Otto Schott (whose Jena glassworks became SCHOTT, also foundation-owned), they built the optical-science cluster of Jena. After WWII the company was split by the Iron Curtain into Zeiss Oberkochen (West) and Zeiss Jena (East), reunifying only after 1990. This foundation ownership — profits flow back into research and social purposes rather than to outside investors — is part of why ZEISS could spend decades and fortunes perfecting EUV optics with no near-term payoff, a patience few publicly traded rivals could sustain.
