Carlisle Companies was founded in 1917 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania — a historic Cumberland County town in the Great Appalachian Valley that had been strategically located since the colonial era. Carlisle Barracks (established 1757) is one of the oldest active US Army installations, and Carlisle itself was an important manufacturing and transportation hub throughout the industrial era. Carlisle Companies started as a rubber and plastics manufacturer and grew through the 20th century into a diversified industrial company. The SynTec Systems acquisition brought Carlisle into commercial roofing through EPDM membrane technology that was being developed in the 1960s as a superior alternative to traditional built-up roofing (BUR) — the multi-layer asphalt and aggregate systems that dominated flat commercial roofing until single-ply membranes arrived. Carlisle SynTec grew to approximately 45% US EPDM market share, making the company's Carlisle, Pennsylvania plant the single most important production facility for commercial building weather protection in North America. Every flat-roofed warehouse, big-box retail store, hospital, school, and office building in the US has a roof either made by Carlisle or by one of two competitors who collectively account for the remaining commercial EPDM market.
