Celanese Corporation (Emulsion Polymers)

HQ US · Texaswebsite ↗

American specialty materials company (NYSE: CE, HQ Irving TX; ~$10.5B revenue); Emulsion Polymers division produces vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE) copolymer emulsions under the VINNAPAS brand — used as an alternative to acrylic emulsions in interior architectural paints, adhesives, and construction products. VAE emulsions are typically lower cost than acrylic but with different film properties; many interior white paint formulations use VAE instead of acrylic to reduce formulation cost. Celanese acquired the VINNAPAS brand through its 2022 acquisition of DuPont's Mobility & Materials segment. Celanese also invented and continues to produce the dry-process separator for lithium batteries (Celgard, also acquired from its predecessor entity) — connecting paint binder chemistry to EV battery manufacturing in the same Texas-headquartered company.

  • Did you know2024

Celanese Corporation (NYSE: CE) is the world's largest producer of cellulose acetate tow — the material that forms the filter in approximately 85% of the world's cigarettes. Celanese's acetate tow business (Acetow) produces the billions of cigarette filter rods consumed annually across global markets. The same Irving, Texas company that makes the VINNAPAS acrylic/VAE emulsions in interior architectural paint and the Delrin acetal engineering resin in precision medical devices also makes the cellulose acetate filter material in cigarettes globally. Paint binders, medical device components, and cigarette filters from one Texas chemical company — three consumer product categories that would not normally intersect in supply chain analysis. Celanese's acetate tow concentration (alongside Eastman Chemical, which controls most of the rest of global acetate tow) means the global cigarette industry's filter supply is controlled by two American specialty chemical companies.

  • Origin2023

Celanese Corporation was founded in 1918 in New York as the American Cellulose & Chemical Manufacturing Company — producing cellulose acetate yarn for WWI aircraft fabric (airplane wings of that era were stretched fabric coated with cellulose acetate dope). The company grew through the 20th century as a diversified acetyl chemistry platform, producing acetic acid, vinyl acetate, and cellulose acetate. The 1985-era divestiture of Celgard (dry-process battery separator technology, sold to Polypore International) separated Celanese from the battery business. The 2022 acquisition of DuPont's Mobility & Materials segment (Delrin, Hytrel, Zytel) for $11B transformed Celanese from a specialty chemical company into one of the world's largest engineering polymer producers — adding DuPont's 60-year-old engineering resin brands to Celanese's acetyl chain.
