Origin2023
CG Power (formerly Crompton Greaves) has origins dating to 1878 in the UK, when Colonel Crompton and Charles Burrell founded an electrical engineering firm that later merged with R.E.B. Crompton's business and Greaves, Cotton & Co. The Indian subsidiary was established in 1937 in Bombay under the Crompton Greaves Power Equipment brand. Through Indian independence, nationalization pressure, and the gradual withdrawal of British ownership, Crompton Greaves became the flagship electrical equipment manufacturer for independent India. The Murugappa Group -- a Tamil Nadu family conglomerate founded in the 1900s -- acquired a controlling stake and eventually renamed the company CG Power in 2020 after an accounting fraud scandal at the subsidiary forced a management restructuring. The company that emerged supplies large power transformers to Duke Energy and Dominion Energy in the US -- a British colonial-era electrical company that became Indian and now helps power the American Southeast.
